Tourism in Tuyên Quang Gains Momentum After Provincial Merger

Tuyên Quang is entering a new phase of tourism growth following the administrative merger with the former Hà Giang province. The expanded geographic space, combined with stronger cultural assets and improved regional connectivity, is shaping the province into a rising destination for green and sustainable tourism in Northern Vietnam.

A new tourism landscape after the merger
The merger created an integrated tourism corridor stretching from Tân Trào through Vị Xuyên, Quản Bạ, Đồng Văn and Lũng Cú to Mã Pì Lèng, then extending southward to Lâm Bình, Na Hang and the centre of Tuyên Quang. This continuous route links historical sites, natural landscapes and ethnic communities across the region.

Recent surveys highlight the potential of this expanded network. Destinations such as Nghĩa trang Quốc gia Vị Xuyên, Núi Đôi Quản Bạ, Lùng Tám, Thẩm Mã, Phố Bảng, Sủng Là, Dinh họ Vương, Cột cờ Lũng Cú, Lô Lô Chải, Du Già, Bạch Ngọc, Lâm Bình and Na Hang now form a cohesive itinerary that showcases cultural diversity and unique highland scenery.

Infrastructure development is accelerating, particularly the Vị Xuyên – Bạch Ngọc – Lâm Bình route. This improvement will support new tourism products such as bamboo forest exploration, adventure travel, trekking and eco-resorts. Travel companies are preparing to launch new itineraries that turn the province’s expanded resources into viable economic opportunities.

The 2025 Buckwheat Flower Festival strengthens provincial branding
The Buckwheat Flower Festival 2025, scheduled to open on 29 November in Đồng Văn, plays a strategic role in promoting the province after the merger. With the theme “The Land Where Stone Blooms”, this year’s festival highlights buckwheat as a cultural symbol rather than a seasonal attraction.

Visitors can join activities such as stone-field cultivation, linen weaving, traditional baking, folk games and agricultural showcases. These experiences reveal the cultural depth of communities across the UNESCO Global Geopark of Đồng Văn Karst Plateau. The festival also aligns with the province’s effort to standardise tourism products and reinforce its identity as a destination of green and responsible travel.

Lô Lô Chải awarded Best Tourism Village 2025
The recognition of Lô Lô Chải by UN Tourism as a Best Tourism Village 2025 is a milestone for Tuyên Quang’s post-merger tourism development. Selected from more than 270 applications worldwide, the village reflects successful community-based tourism built on cultural preservation and sustainable livelihoods.

Located along the Đồng Văn – Lũng Cú – Mã Pì Lèng route, Lô Lô Chải offers visitors an authentic experience of earthen-walled houses, traditional music and long-preserved rituals. The village has become a signature asset for the region and a model for responsible tourism. Its international recognition enhances the province’s visibility and supports the upcoming Buckwheat Flower Festival by drawing more interest from cultural explorers.

Green tourism as the core direction for 2025–2035
Tuyên Quang is shaping its long-term strategy around nature, culture and people. The province now hosts fifty-four community-based tourism villages, many of which have earned OCOP three to four star certification. Models like H’Mong Village and Nặm Đăm show how sustainable practices can bring real benefits to local residents.

Green development is becoming central to provincial planning. Clean energy projects are being integrated into tourism infrastructure, and ecological spaces are being designed to preserve natural flows while enriching visitor experiences. Circular tourism practices are emerging from community initiatives, and eco-friendly vehicles are encouraged on key routes.

Regional cooperation with Northeastern provinces is expanding, forming a larger network dedicated to sustainable and responsible travel. Initiatives such as tree-planting for each visitor, cross-border cycling and zero-waste tourism are contributing to a more vibrant tourism landscape.

According to Vice Chairman of Tuyên Quang Province Vương Ngọc Hà, the goal for the coming years is to make tourism a key economic pillar built on green values, cultural integrity and technological progress.

A new chapter for Tuyên Quang
The province is moving forward with a clearer strategic identity and broader resource base. The 2025 Buckwheat Flower Festival is becoming a cultural highlight that attracts travelers seeking the colours and atmosphere of the northern highlands. The international recognition of Lô Lô Chải reinforces Tuyên Quang’s reputation in global community-based tourism.

The growing ecosystem of green tourism products, from cultural immersion and adventure travel to ecological retreats, is shaping a renewed image for Tuyên Quang. This development path, rooted in nature, culture and people, positions the province for a decade of confident growth and deeper integration into the global movement toward sustainable tourism.
