Dong Thap: The Timeless Charm of the Land of Pink Lotus
It remains a mystery when lotus flowers first became inseparable from the daily life of Dong Thap’s people. Yet from the very moment you arrive, an ocean of pink blossoms stretches before your eyes, filling the air with serenity and a beauty so profound it stirs your soul.
A welcoming sign greets travelers at the province’s gateway: “The Land of Pink Lotus - Dong Thap warmly welcomes you.” Following the highway toward Cao Lanh City, you’ll find the landscape painted in shades of pink and green, as blooming lotus ponds appear at every turn. At the city’s central roundabout, the smiling statue of Bé Sen (Little Lotus Girl) stands gracefully, her cheerful presence easing away the weariness of the road.
Throughout Cao Lanh, major streets are adorned with vibrant lotus motifs. The main boulevard leading to the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee and the road to Cao Lanh Ferry have even earned the affectionate nickname “Lotus Streets,” capturing the city’s signature charm.
Located in Ward 1 of Cao Lanh City, Van Mieu Park (also known as Van Thanh Temple - the Temple of Literature) embodies the province’s deep respect for learning and culture. Built to honor Confucian traditions, the park features lush greenery, expansive lawns, and Khổng Tử Lake – a tranquil three-hectare water feature named after Confucius himself. Throughout the year, the park also hosts cultural exhibitions and events celebrating the lotus, the province’s enduring symbol.
A journey to Dong Thap Muoi would not be complete without tasting the many delicacies made from lotus seeds. Though modest in size, the seeds are naturally sweet, rich in flavor, and packed with nutrients. Every part of the lotus, from its seeds, petals, and leaves to its roots, is treasured in local cuisine, prized for both its purity and health benefits.
Visitors seeking an authentic experience can join local farmers in rowing across vast lotus fields, harvesting blossoms, fishing, or simply taking photos amidst the breathtaking scenery. The warmth and hospitality of the people here make each moment feel personal and memorable.
Among Dong Thap’s most beloved attractions, the Thap Muoi Lotus Tourist Area in My Hoa Commune stands out as a must-visit. Here, visitors can fully embrace the pure air, the gentle fragrance, and the mesmerizing beauty of endless lotus ponds, an unforgettable journey into the very heart of the Mekong Delta’s “Land of Pink Lotus.”
